Pulmonology
Dr. Thompson served as the Lead Statistician for the PIOPED study, designed to determine the efficacy of CT scans in detecting pulmonary embolism. He also served on the Data Safety Monitoring Boards for PIOPED II, and PIOPED III. Dr. Thompson has developed with investigators at the Texas Children’s Hospital, seminal papers investigating the role of HAART therapy in the immune reconstitution of infants with HIV infection and the reappearance of asthma. More recently, both Dr. Thompson and Dr. Frederick have developed, in conjunction with the NHLBI, a data repository and tissue banking system, designed to assist Pulmonologists in testing phenotypic biomarkers of interstitial lung disease and chromic obstructive pulmonary disease. This registry has over 2,000 tissues, which are available along with the patient’s clinical data for any investigator wishing to evaluate potential biomarkers or other studies of lung function.
